Molluscum Contagiosum...

I decided to write a post about this because we went through several months of Amelia having this virus and it wasn't fun.  I had never heard of it until my SIL told me about it.  My nieces had it and from what our pediatricians/dermatologist told us, it's very common.  And very contagious.  Thus the name.

Molluscum Contagiosum isn't life threatening by any means.  It's in the "pox family" of viruses.  It can't hurt your child - it's just really annoying - especially for children that struggle with eczema.   Amelia is our super-sensitive-to-everything child.  We couldn't even use Dreft when she was a baby because she would break out all over her body.  She couldn't use the sweet smelling baby lotions.  To this day, if I try to put a new outfit on her without washing it first - she'll break out all over her body.

I'm not going to lie, when she caught this virus and I started reading about it, I freaked out inside.  It can stay in their system for up to a year and even as long as three years.  You're supposed to keep it covered whenever they're around other children, they can't bathe with their siblings, they aren't supposed to swim with other children, and they can't scratch it or it will spread the virus.  It's a never ending cycle if they're always scratching it.  And a child with eczema seems to always have sensitive areas that itch.

We found ourselves constantly telling Amelia:
"don't kiss your sister on the mouth"
"don't scratch your arm"
"don't kiss your cousins on the mouth"
"don't scratch your leg"
"don't kiss your friends on the mouth"

What's with little girls wanting to kiss everyone?? I never realized until we were dealing with this virus.  We just didn't want her to spread it and give the virus to other children and per our doctor, we knew how easily that could happen.

We took Amelia to a pediatric dermatologist.  We decided on a treatment where they would inject a yeast into the top of one of the lesions.  This treatment has the best success rate but it takes several injections.  You get one injection per month for up to 6-7 months.

Amelia was still getting new lesions and was MISERABLE after our first injection.  She would cry at bedtime and ask us when her "spots" were going to go away.  She would pray at bedtime and ask God to take her "spots" away.  She would ask why her sister couldn't take a bath with her anymore.  We never told her it was because of her virus but she knew.  It broke our hearts.

So...I stayed up that night and cried and searched the internet until 2am for any and all treatments available.  I read every review known to man.  In my search I found THIS product and decided it couldn't hurt to try it.  I ordered two tubes, not knowing how much it would take if it really worked.  I'm going to be honest, I would have paid any amount of money at that point to get rid of it.  At the point of my three year old crying every night - that's when this Mama took matters into her own hands and there was no price tag too large to help her.

This was our routine every single night for two weeks.  They recommend you use the product 2-3 times a day but it can stain clothing and I didn't want to make Amelia start and finish her day with this process.  We chose to only use it at night after bath time.  The first picture is the amount of lesions she had when we first started.  The second is how many she had after using the product for a week.

This is the before and after picture - when we first started using the product and at the end of the two weeks.   She also had it on the back of one of her legs.

The medicine is plant-based and literally dried out every single lesion.  It was amazing!  It did dry her skin out a little, so after it dried I would put vaseline on her as well.  I used a blow dryer on a cool setting to dry the medicine really well before putting her pjs on her. Her bedtime routine was about a 30 minute process every night but it was worth it because this medicine killed the virus within 2 weeks!  Months later, you can't even tell Amelia ever had the virus on her arm and leg.

We took her back to her dermatologist and all though the scientist in her wouldn't agree the medicine we used is what cleared it up within two weeks, she did admit she has never seen a child get rid of the virus with just one shot of the yeast that Amelia had been given. She said it always takes at least 6 injections and sometimes the injections don't get rid of it.

I totally believe the Conzerol works and if you know anyone who is dealing with MCV - tell them about it.  Even though our dermatologist said it wasn't the Conzerol that cleared the virus - I noticed her nurse jotted down the name of the medicine and I hope they tell other families about it.  We needed less than one tube of the medicine to get rid of all of Amelia's lesions.  And it was worth every penny spent!

I'm not being paid to write this review.  I just want anyone dealing with this virus to know this medicine works!!

I have never commented before but LOVE your blog. Not sure how I stumbled across it but I'm here now! I have experienced the nasty molluscum virus before and it is TERRIBLE! I ended up using a home remedy after my dermatologist used liquid nitrogen on it in a failed attempt to get rid of my lesion! I will keep this product in mind if I ever have to deal with it! Thanks for the information! Glad Amelia's MC cleared up quickly and is not ongoing!!

I read your blog often, but have never commented. My son is 2.5 and also has MC, we've had it for over a year! He also has some other health issues and is immuno-suppressed so our immunologist told us it could take years for it to go away. His is all under his neck and down his chest. And just recently, I found two lesions in his diaper area. He honestly doesnt mess with them at all, but I'd really like to see them gone. I am going to order this treatment and cross my fingers that it works as well for Kaden. Thanks for posting this!!!

Poor baby. Those lesions look awful! I'm so glad you took matters into your own hands (although we know The Lord was guiding your steps :) and found her some relief! It's funny that the nurse jotted the name of the medicine down...just in case ;)

I am SO glad you posted about this! Brody has had MC for about a year.
Our ped hasn't said anything about keeping it covered or bathing with siblings. He acted like it was no big deal. Now I am a little afraid we have shared this with others!!!
His is also on the same spot as Amelia's. I'm definitely going to order this! Thanks for sharing! That's a huge difference in her skin.

Ryan has bumps just like this!! The doctor told me they were warts and gave me some medicine that really hasn't done much. He only has them on his belly. I may need to order this medicine to see if it will help him.

My friend works for a company called mollusumrx, you should check out their product too!

Hello Elizabeth, thankyou for posting, I went trough the same situation with my son Josh, he is 3 yo, he had around 25 lesions in the low part of the neck, and some more over his armpits. Like most of the stories our pediatritian told us to WAIT!, but were not willing to let this happens to our child, so we decided to try every single product available including molluscumrx and a couple more products... After we try those and see NO RESULTS, we bought a tube of Conzerol, (we put this at the end of our list because of the price), but I wish I bought this first!!.

We started to see results in just a copule of days, the conzerolinmediatly started to make the lesions red, and within a week some of the lesions started ton form a scab... and after that lesions dried up.

I'm so gratefull with the conzerol cream because they even gave us consultation for free, we went every day to their chat system (Top notch by the way) and they helped us so much to overcome this.

Hope my story helps to all the moms like us who are reading this.

We have been dealing with Molluscum for almost 2 months now on my oldest daughter who is almost 3. It started out with 1 bump above her armpit that was definitely "weird". It starting kinda looking like staph, so I took her to the doctor who told us it was Molluscum. She recommended no treatment other than putting a dab of Neosporin on it. We did and a couple of days later the white core came out and it started healing up and we were like "DONE! Praise God!". 2 weeks went by and by chance, I noticed something red in Audrey's armpit and it was another bump! My heart sank. At this stage I poured hours and hours into the internet looking for a solution. We immediately found the government study on the tea tree oil and iodine combination and bought Zymaderm. I got the white core out again and started treatment. I know that it can spread when that comes out, so I tried to be careful. Another bump appeared! At this point I ordered Lemon Myrtle oil from Australia. It's an essential oil and I created a 10% solution of it and 90% olive oil. I applied Zymaderm morning and lunchtime and Lemon Myrtle at bedtime. I again thought we were on the down-swing until another bump appeared. Again, researched and researched on the internet and started treating her with peroxide and Clearasil in the morning, peroxide and tea tree oil at lunch and peroxide and lemon myrtle at bedtime. Again, looked like the bumps were going away and not contagious anymore and thought I could see the light. Until... yesterday I noticed about a DOZEN teeny tiny little bumps below her shoulder. I put Vaseline on them last night and looked at them this morning and they are still there. I had a BAD BAD BAD feeling. It was then that I really cried out to God and really prayed. I told him everything about how I hated that I couldn't let my 2 girls bathe together anymore, how I hated treating my daughter like a "leper" and how I hated having to wash my hands every time I touched her or her clothes. How I hated washing and bleaching her towels every day and bleaching the bathtub everyday. But mostly, I hated the fact that she LOVES swimming and has so much joy in doing it and how I was so disappointed that I wouldn't be able to take her this summer. It was then that I did one more Google search and low and behold your blog popped up! Russell is my cousin and I've met you once at a shower and have kinda kept up with your blog WHEN I have blogged which has not been much in the past 4 months. I feel that this is a sign from God and have immediately ordered the ointment that you recommended. I will keep you updated and am just praying that this works! We have a family reunion in July and one of the main things that we do is all of the kids hang out at the pool. I have had so much fear inside of me, but for once in almost 2 months, finally have HOPE! Thanks Jill!!!

Aww! Got your message on my blog!! I forgot - I have been updating that one monthly, but just enough to get by lol! We are so so blessed with two beautiful amazing daughters just like you! They are so precious and bring so much joy into our lives!! I've been able to stay home for 2.5 years now to raise them and I couldn't be more grateful! God's blessings have been immeasurable!! Thank you thank you for all of your prayers to bring them here!! That means so much to me! They are my entire world and I feel like they are my life's purpose! God is so good!! :) We will get through this nasty little virus. I'm constantly having to put things in perspective and remind myself that this is temporary and minor compared to the disease and illness that some Moms have to go through with their babies. It's just been frustrating to have my baby have something like this...all I can think about is how to make her better! I know you feel my pain!! Thanks so much again for all of your prayers and for this post! If you'd ever like to do a play date, just send me a message! Mine are a little behind yours, but not by much! Well, that is, after we win this Molluscum battle lol!! Take care!!! Laura

I ran across this blog while researching molluscum. My daughter has had this since May and I just purchased Conzerol. Did your daughter have any side effects from this medicine? Have they returned at all? Thank you.

Jill said...

Anonymous,

Amelia had really dry skin as a result - it was really red but nothing Vaseline every night wouldn't cure. The redness/dryness went away after treatment and her skin is back to normal. It hasn't come back since we used this product.

Thanks so much for responding. My daughter has about 20 lesions on her left arm, two on her neck and about 5 on her stomach. I am so discouraged and cry constantly over this even though they don't seem to bother her. We have had 4 cantharidin treatments and even though she doesn't complain it looks awful after its done. Your blog has given me a glimmer of hope that we can beat this. Conzerol just shipped today so we are excited to start. Thanks

I understand. The night I came across this medicine, I was up until 1am, crying. I will pray this works for your little girl.

It's now almost the end of September and yay..... The spots are almost gone!!!!!!! They are fading so quickly now!!! It took awhile and at first I was giving up, but then suddenly it's working so quickly! Thank you for your blog!!!!

My son was diagnosed with this horrible virus. I didn't know what it was and just let it go until I put lotion on his legs since he was itchy on very cold nights. I felt the bumps and something just did not sit well with me. I started to search online and this virus came up. Next day I took his to the pediatrician and sure enough confirmed my suspicion. But the dr said that there is nothing they can do for it other than cortizone cream. I did it for 3 days and I started to search online. I came across Conzerol and we are on day 3. I see some of the spots turning red with little dots drying out. I truly hope for this miracle as I have three little kids and do not want this crazy virus spread in the house. I am not sure as to where my son got htis virus but am wondering if its from indoor water park we went to in November. How long does it take for this virus to show up on the surface of the skin?

Jill said...

Sylvia,

From what I understand, it can take a month for the lesions to start appearing after being exposed to the virus. So if your child has been around someone with it - you just have to wait and see. My youngest daughter never got it, even though her sister had it. So hopefully, the rest of your kiddos won't get it either. It's important not to let them bathe together or kiss on the mouth, etc. And your son probably did get it from a water park. Pools are one of the #1 places that you can get it. :( I hope this medicine works for your son. I have received so many emails from parents saying it worked for them - just like it did for us!

Thank you for your blog, I was despairing that my 3 year old would have to deal with the discomfort and inconvenience of these horrible spots for months or years. I found the Conzerol website and liked the sound of it, but it was your blog that convinced me. And two weeks after receiving and applying the ointment my daughter is delightedly exclaiming "look, my skin is normal and smooth again, I can touch it"!! It is such a blessed relief:)

I posted a comment on your blog in Sep '13 under the name Tmeadebwe after I ordered Conzerol. I just wanted to write back and let everyone know that it works!! It took about 2 weeks to kill the initial outbreak and another week to kill a few that had popped up during the treatment time. Sorry it took so long to write back! If anyone else comes across this blog, don't hesitate to order Conzerol!

thank you for writing this blog. Its ignited more hope into my spirit, as we are three days into Conzerol treatment for my 15 month old who has had MC for almost 10 months. It has been heartbreaking just the same as everyone else and we tried EVERY POSSIBLE NATURAL REMEDY to no avail. In three days about half of the dozen she has under her arm pit turned bright red and purple and started drying out.. the ones on the side of her torso and the arm are getting their dots (centers) and drying out... it is the most incredible thing to witness. She does NOT like getting the medicine put on, and we do not get in on nearly as neatly as you were able to on your daughter, but we are getting it on twice a day. I think Conzerol is miraculous... I don't know how i didn't come across it sooner.. im so glad so many of you have had "healing" experiences using it. #conzerol.

I don't even know your name. I found your blog on a Google search after getting home from the Pediatrician this morning. My son has this nasty little virus.
From one mother to another, thank you. As a pre-med student of Naturopathic Medicine I knew there had to be something that would tackle the virus head on. I am finding also that there are other remedies that parents are having success with as well such as Himalayan Salt Baths and Rubbing pure Tea Tree Oil on the lesions. I know there has to be some sort of anti-viral botanical infusion you can take orally to attack this pox virus within the blood stream. These methods, along with boosting the immune system, are sure to get anyone with this virus on the road to quick recovery. God bless you.

Our 5 year old has had this for a year. It's continuing to spread and after having a new baby and becoming terrified of it spreading to him, I've been googling like crazy. We've tried everything over the last year. And, like everyone else, were told to "wait it out" by our pediatrician. I just ordered a tube and am praying we finally see some results. She's asked about her "spots" all the time and it bothers her so much. I've seen her little spirit just be crushed when kids ask her about them. So sad! Thank you, thank you for this post! Crossing everything we get them under control!!:)

I, too, have stumbled on your blog after hours of crying while searching until the end of the internet for information on MC!! Two of my precious sons have it, and we are at our wits end. I order two tubes of Conzerol (my husband was very skeptical of over enthusiastic reviews on their website) and I am over the moon to have found your blog post! We started the treatment last night, and finding your testimony (from a a REAL family) has put more faith into the process! I am praying that we will have the success that you all did, and I am so grateful that you wrote this review. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Unfortunately we did not have much success with Conzerol. Molescum RX was advised to us by a friend to order online and withing 2 weeks it has dried up the molescum. We tried Conzerol for 2ontha and had no results. If Conzerol doesn't work I hightly recommend Molescum RX.

@ Ryan. Thank you for the suggestion. I did have some success over the course of two months. The instructions call for application 2-3 times a day and since that stuff stains so bad and my son has it on his face, neck, chest and back I could only put it on once at night. If there was a way that it would not stain I would be able to use it as instructed without damaging his clothing. When I ran out of it, I just didn't have the money to purchase more. The lesions began to come back with a vengeance so I took him to the dermatologist and he said there is nothing I can do. I will try your suggestion and let you all know if I have any success with it. Thanks again.

My 3 year old daughter has the MC. Its absolutely heart breaking to see your child go through this, regardless of the fact that it is mostly painless. I feel helpless.

I first discovered her first lession on her upper arm just next to her armpit. It grew in size, as i thought it was as small wart "ojo de peso" as we call in latin american countries. I myself had one or two as a child and was never a big deal. Little did i know this was the molluscum contagiosum virus, in which i had never heard of.

Long story short my daughter has been had MC for a few months progressively getting worse and worse as they spread throught her body.

She has them on her right arm , a few on her tummy, one on her thigh and in other scattred areas. I came across this blog as i searched for solutions, suggestions and even treatments that other parents have tried.

I am now optimistic and want to thank you for this blog. I am in complete dispare but have now found some hope. I will keep updating her "progress".

THANK YOU!

I have a 6 year old daughter who has mc . She has had it for almost a year 😣 she calls them pimples. Ive tried almost everything. I notice it started under her chin on her neck then it started going down to her chest and armpits, her stomach her back and now on her arm and close to her panty line. It was real bad when it was on her neck .it seemed like it was moving its way down her body .once they do get the whitehead I pop them then put antifungal cream on them and with a day or two it's almost gone .i also have four other children and none of them have caught it .and to be honest they still sleep, bathe, hug and kiss each other. My kids age range from 2 months to 11 years old .like I said I noticed it started at top and it's working its way down so maybe it's moving its way out of the body because she has not gotten them back on her upper body .
